Begin with a reader's question

We identify the question a resource explains and the people it is for. A guide should answer a topic in depth; a worksheet should help complete a task. A title and summary must describe what the reader will actually find, not a broader service the material does not provide.

Connect a statement to its source

Health, safety and development content links to appropriate original guidance. Source checks consider the particular statement, including the population and conditions that apply.

The sources page identifies examples of this relationship. Outside research stays attributed to the program or population studied; it is not evidence of an NPF outcome.

Make the complete resource usable

We consider the explanation, examples, headings and next steps together, with attention to different family arrangements and ways to participate. Checks include link destinations, downloads and the summaries used in navigation and search.

Illustrative conversations and fictional practice situations are labeled. Personal accounts require separate fact checking and appropriate consent.

Describe review accurately

Source verification and editorial checks are different from independent professional review. A professional review credit may appear only when the review occurred and its scope, qualifications and permission to attribute the work are documented. A source citation does not mean the source organization reviewed or endorsed NPF's material.

For individual health concerns, use an appropriate clinician who can assess your circumstances.

Address errors and changes

Readers can report a factual error, outdated information, unclear sentence, broken link or access problem. Include the page and the specific issue; a supporting original source is helpful. A correction needs to reach related summaries, tools and saved versions as well as the article.

Substantial changes should be explained when the explanation is needed to understand the corrected information.

Keep funding and permissions separate

Financial support does not buy a favorable editorial conclusion or a product endorsement. Reusing or adapting a resource is a separate permission question. Keep any applicable attribution and scope notes with the material.
